VLSI Technology

INTRODUCTION OF VLSI

Very-large-scale integration (VLSI) is the process of creating an integrated circuit (IC) by combining thousands of transistors into a single chip.

VLSI began in the 1970s when complex semiconductor and communication technologies were being developed. The microprocessor is a VLSI device. Before the introduction of VLSI technology most ICs had limited set of functions they could perform. An electronic circuit might consist of a CPU, ROM, RAM and other glue logic. VLSI lets IC designers add all of these into one chip.

In 1979 Jack Balletto, Dan Floyd, and Gunnar Wetlesen found The company of VLSI Technology.

VLSI Technology, Inc was a company which designed and manufactured custom and semi-custom ICs. The company was based in Silicon Valley, with headquarters at 1109 McKay Drive in San Jose, California. Along with LSI Logic, VLSI Technology defined the leading edge of the application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) business, which accelerated the push of powerful embedded systems into affordable products.

VLSI was acquired in June 1999 for about $1 billion by Philips Electronics and is today a part of the Philips spin-off NXP Semiconductors.

Alfred J. Stein became the CEO of the company in 1982. Subsequently VLSI built its first fab(semiconductor fabrication plant) in San Jose.eventually a second fab(semiconductor fabrication plant) was built in San Antonio, Texas by Alfred J. Stein. VLSI had its initial public offering in 1983, and was listed on the stock market as (NASDAQ: VLSI). The company was acquired by Philips and survives to this day as part of NXP Semiconductors.

Since the 1980s until today "very large-scale integration" (VLSI) has produced for many applications. In the early 1980s, the number of transistors on a chip range from a few hundred transistors and reach several billion transistors in 2009.

Perkembangan teknologi elektronika empat puluh lima tahun terakhir tak lepas dari kemajuan teknik Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI).
VLSI merupakan pengembangan dari Large Scale Integration (LSI) memuat ratusan komponen dalam sebuah chip– yang dikembangkan sejak tahun 1980-an.
